PHILADELPHIA, P.A. - The Bloomfield College men's basketball team dropped their second game in a row after suffering an 80-75 setback in overtime against Holy Family University on Saturday. Senior guard
Marvin Williams Jersey, City, N.J.) led the Bloomfield attack with a game-high 19 points. Williams also added 8 rebounds and 6 assists to his game. Freshman forward,
Ignacio Diez added his first career double-double to the Bears effort, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, connecting on 5-of-8 from three-point range. Bloomfield falls to 7-11 overall and 6-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play. With the victory Holy Family improves to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in conference action.
The Tigers got off to a strong start jumping out to an 18-8 lead with 15:18 left in the opening period. The Bears drew the score to 18-17 with 10:54 left in the half following a 9-0 run sparked by buckets from freshmen,
Jamal Smith (Newark, N.J.) and
Nick Davidson (Lumberton, N.J.). The Bears stayed close, until Holy Family pressed ahead by 11 (31-20) with 3:16 left to play in the half. Williams began to heat up, knocking down all of his six first half points in the final three minutes of the half. Bloomfield trimmed the lead to just five heading into the locker room down 35-30.
A revamped Bloomfield team would come out in the second half, led by senior,
Matt Hall (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who netted 11 points in the second period on 5-for-6 shooting. The Bears seized their first lead of the game with 14:58 left to play in regulation after Williams drilled a three-pointer to give the visiting squad a 42-41 advantage. Holy Family kept the game close, never falling behind by more than five. With 4:44 left to play the Tigers regained the lead after a pair of free throws left the home team up 55-54. The teams battled to a 63-63 tie at the 1:25 minute mark and Hall buried a jumper in the paint to push Bloomfield ahead. The Bears were poised to steal the road victory when Williams was sent to the line with just :42 remaining in the game but the senior converted 1 out-of-two from the charity stripe leaving Holy Family down just one possession. Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J.) made the most of that opportunity for the Tigers, banging a three-pointer to tie the game at 66-66 and send it to overtime.
Holy Family dominated in the extra frame, shooting 83.3% (5-of-6) from the field and held the Bears to just 28.6% (2-of-7) shooting. The home squad led the entire overtime period and Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Crawford combined for 10 points, netting 5 a piece to secure the Holy Family victory.
Hall ended the game with 15 points and Davidson added 14 while grabbing 8 rebounds for Bloomfield. Gans and Crawford finished the contest with 16 points each while Gans snagged a game-high 13 rebounds to notch his third double-double of the year for the Tigers.
