David Caputo just completed his third season as the head women’s basketball coach at Bloomfield College and was named the 2016 CACC Coach of the Year, after guiding the Bears to their “three peat” third straight regular season conference championship title. In 2016, Caputo also led his squad to their second NCAA tournament appearance, and his team set program records in overall wins (24) and conference wins/record with an (18-1) mark. Since Caputo’s arrival in 2013-2014, Bloomfield has amassed the second best conference record in the entire east region with an incredible (48-9) mark. In his first season, his Bloomfield program made history. Caputo’s squad captured their first ever outright CACC regular season crown, the conference tournament championship and also the program’s first ever automatic NCAA Tournament berth. Under “Coach Cap’s watch, his team’s defense have finished ranked Top 10 in the nation in PPG allowed in each of his three years at the helm, and ranked fifth this past season. In the 2014-2015 season “Coach Cap’s” Bears team received their first ever national ranking as they hit #21 in the NCAA DII polls. His first recruit to Bloomfield in 2013-14 was guard, Tianna Smith. Smith was recently named the Conference Player of The Year and honorable mention All American this past season in 2016. During his tenure at Bloomfield, Caputo has coached 8 All Conference players, 1 All American, 1 conference player of the year, and 1 defensive conference player of the year.
Caputo has now win six regular season conference championship titles in all six seasons being a head coach at the collegiate level, while totaling an overall conference record of (78-14) between the two programs. He won his first three conference titles at Indian River CC (2009-2011), which is a Division I junior college in Florida. While at Indian River, Caputo was named conference coach of the year in 2009 and then was voted national coach of the year runner up in 2010. He also sent over 20 young ladies on to the four year level, 12 of which went on to NCAA Division I programs.
Prior to arriving at Bloomfield, the talented recruiter and X’s and O’s coach, had a solid two-year stint at Louisiana Tech University(NCAA DI-, in which he helped guide the Lady Techsters to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Finals during the 2011-2012 season and the Tournament Semifinals during the 2012-2013 campaign. Serving as the top assistant under WNBA legend and Women's Basketball Hall of Famer Teresa Weatherspoon, Caputo was instrumental in the signing of the No. 45 ranked recruiting class in the country in 2012, and helped sign the second ranked junior college player in the nation according to Collegiate Girls Report for the class of 2013. In all, Caputo helped develop six All-Conference honorees during his tenure at Louisiana Tech, with five players signing professional contracts in overseas leagues.
Caputo's return to Bloomfield is for the second time in his esteemed coaching career, having served as an assistant for the men’s team under current head coach Gerald Holmes from 2002-2006. His first tenure at the institution saw Caputo help Bloomfield to three consecutive CACC Tournament titles and two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances – including the first berth in program history.
His other previous coaching stops include stints as an assistant at NCAA Division I- Florida Atlantic University during the 2007-2008 season and NJCAA Division I institution- Santa Fe Community College during the 2006-2007 campaign. A talented recruiter, Caputo helped secure the highest nationally ranked recruiting class in the history of the Florida Atlantic program (No. 54).
Caputo resides in Willingboro, New Jersey with his beautiful wife Denise and their two sons, Dana (23) and Christian (2).
