Deacons wrap up regular season crown with 2-1 victory over Nyack

NYACK, NY - The men's soccer team improved to 12-3-1 on the season Tuesday afternoon, exercising the demons of last year's CACC Final loss with a 2-1 victory over defending champion Nyack College in their last conference road test of the regular season.  The win moved the Deacons to 9-0-1 in CACC play in 2010, ensuring the team's first regular season conference crown under head coach Peter-John Falloon.

It was clear the Warriors were intent on spoiling the Deacons' chance to wrap up the title in the game's early going, as a feverish sense of urgency led to a Nyack goal off the foot of Andriy Pozdniadkov to put the home team up 1-0 in the 20th minute.  But Coach Falloon's squad was able to withstand the early charge, and knotted the score at one with a goal in the waning seconds of the first half.  Cesar Ventura buried a feed from Claude Allen from just outside the 18 to draw Bloomfield even in the 45th minute, sending the sides to intermission deadlocked at one.

The Deacons carried the momentum from Ventura's strike into the second frame, dominating the action and out-shooting the Warriors 11-5 over the final 45 minutes.  The visitors finally broke through with the eventual game-winning tally in the 57th minute, when Carlos Brufau fired a shot to the back of the net from inside the 18 to put the Deacons up 2-1.  It was a lead they would not relinquish, with keeper Steven Alonso needing to turn away just three shots in the second half to preserve the vindicating one-goal victory.

"A regular season conference championship is a tremendous accomplishment for our players," head coach Peter-John Falloon said.  "It's one of the goals we had set for ourselves when this season started, so I'm extremely proud we have accomplished the first step.  To do it against a great team like Nyack, the team that beat us in the Finals last year, makes it even more special.  Hopefully, this is the first step towards reaching the rest of our goals."

The team returns to action Thursday, October 28 with their final home contest of the season against Post University.  The opening whistle is set for 2:00 PM, with a special ceremony to honor the club's nine seniors set for halftime.
