BLOOMFIELD - The men's tennis team evened their record at 1-1 overall and moved to 1-0 in CACC play Wednesday afternoon, as they took a 6-3 decision against Post University in the club's conference opener.
Bloomfield was able to build a sizable advantage early in the contest, sweeping the doubles matches and taking a 3-0 lead into singles play.
Andres DeCastro and
Lordale Benosa needed extra points to take down the Post team of Caio Rodrigues and Hylton Davis in a 9-7 first doubles match, while
Ceran Messam and
Jamal Loper topped Muamer Ahmetovic and Mark Risbridger 8-2 in second doubles.
Evan McCall and
Peter Beckford completed the Bloomfield sweep in third doubles with a 9-7 victory over Markeese McLeod and Michael MacDonald, putting the Deacons in prime position to earn their first CACC victory of the season.
Messam needed three sets to top Rodrigues in first singles, putting Bloomfield up 4-0 with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. Post got on the board in the second singles matchup, when Ahmetovic topped DeCastro 7-5, 6-1, but Benosa quickly moved the Deacons' advantage back to four with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in third singles to give Bloomfield a 5-1 lead. Alanin Ripon gave post their second victory of the match in fourth singles, topping
Luis Perez 6-0, 6-0, but
Terry Gibbs iced the Bloomfield victory in fifth singles, besting Risbridger 6-4, 6-3 to secure the win.
"It's good to get our first victory under our belt," Deacons head coach
Peter-John Falloon said. "We're 1-0 in conference, which is certainly a good thing. We have some tough matches coming up, so we need to get ready for them and keep improving."
Bloomfield returns to action Sunday, March 27 with a home match against CACC foe University of the Sciences. The match is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
