BOX SCORE
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (September 21, 2011) - Senior forward
Terry Gibbs (London, England) scored his first goal of the season in the early stages of the second half Wednesday evening, as Bloomfield's men's soccer team held on to earn a 1-0 road victory over the University of Bridgeport. The win is the first of the season for Bloomfield and moves the club to 1-5 overall, snapping a five-game losing streak that began the 2011 season. Bridgeport moves to 3-3 overall with the loss.
After playing to a scoreless draw through the match's first 45 minutes, Gibbs corralled a feed from sophomore midfielder
Claude Allen (Kingston, Jamaica) and fired it past Bridgeport keeper Danny Hernandez to put the Deacons up a score in the 46th minute.
The Bloomfield defense proved up to the task of preserving the slim one-goal advantage, turning away each of the Purple Knights' 13 shots and nine corner kick opportunities to notch their first shutout of the season. Sophomore keeper
Daniel Hyde (East Orange, NJ) made three saves to pick up the first victory of his Bloomfield career, earning his first shutout in net as a member of the Deacons. Jon Aristizabal led the offensive effort for Birdgeport totaling five shots in the loss, while Hernandez made four saves in net.
"It certainly feels good to get our first win," Bloomfield head coach
Peter-John Falloon said. "But the way we won this game is very important. "We played a very good game defensively, and that is the key to winning for us. We now know how we need to attack each game in order to win, so hopefully our struggles are behind us and we can build some momentum from this victory."
Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, September 24 with a road match against CACC rival Nyack College. Start time for the contest is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
