BEARS TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS IN 80-43 WIN OVER DOWLING

OAKDALE, N.Y. - Junior Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) netted 20 points for the second consecutive game as the Bears women's basketball team took care of business Thursday evening against non-conference foe, Dowling College on the road. The 80-43 victory improved Bloomfield's record to 6-2 on the season while the Golden Lions fell to 0-4 in 2015.

Smith, who reached 20 points for the third consecutive game was 7-for-14 from the field, including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-5 from the stripe, while collecting five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Senior Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) tallied eighteen points (7-14 FG, 2-8 3-FG), four rebounds and four steals in 20 minutes off the bench. Classmates Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) and Iman Williams (Shreveport, La.) each contributed 7 rebounds and 6 points for the Bears and sophomore Jahniece Jaffe (Egg Harbor, N.J.) posted 12 points connecting on 4-for-9 from long distance.

Tanna Mohammed scored a team-high 13 points (4-12 FG, 2-7 3-FG) off the bench and Julia Winnik netted 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field while Kayla Hill pulled down a game-high 8 boards for Dowling.

Smith buried a 3-pointer to put the Bears up 8-2 early in the first quarter but the Golden Lions charged back with a 10-2 spurt to close out the opening frame up 12-10. Ten points from Smith in the second quarter became Bloomfield's point margin as the visitors built a 28-18 lead heading into the halftime break.

The Bears stretched their lead in the third by coming out with an 8-0 run after a Wilson jumper in the paint. A Williams' rebound and put-back gave Bloomfield a 21 point advantage (44-23) with 3:59 remaining in the period and Alexia' Tucker (Halifax, Va.) knocked in a trey-ball to cap the scoring with her team up comfortably at 50-31 heading into the final period.

A personal 7-2 run from Smith in the beginning of the fourth pushed the Merrimack deficit up to 57-33 with 7:41 on the clock. The Bears led by as many as fourty-one (80-39) before four points from Mohammed closed out the game with Bloomfield winning their sixth game of the season.

Bloomfield outshot Dowling, 40.3 percent (27-67) to 25.5 percent (13-51) on the evening and won the battle on the glass, 54-30. The Bears committed 21 turnovers to the Golden Lion's 19 but capitalized with 24 points off turnovers to the home team's 14. Bloomfield also dominated in the paint with a 22-4 edge down low.

Smith finished the night with 786 points to inch closer to 1,000 for her career and is on pace to eclipse that plateau before season's end.

The Bears hibernate for a day before opening up a two-game homestand with crosstown Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division rival, Felician College paying a visit on Saturday, December 5. The Golden Falcons look to move over .500 in league play when they enter the Bloomfield Gym for a 1:00 pm battle. The Bears will host another CACC North Division foe in Dominican College on Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm.
