NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLE DIP AGAINST DOWLING LEAVES BEARS IN SEVEN GAME SLIDE

Oakdale, N.Y. –The Bloomfield College baseball (1-12) team was swept in a non-conference double-header against Dowling College (9-3) losing game one, 10-1 and game two, 2-0. Saturday's losses marked the Bears sixth and seventh consecutive setbacks.

Freshman righty, Steven Acosta (Lakewood, N.J.) got the ball in game one and battled hard on the road for Bloomfield. The Golden Lions got on the board in the bottom of the second when a couple of seeing-eye singles, a blooper, and a walk gave them a 2-0 lead after the two full frames.

Bloomfield showed some signs of life in the top of the fourth as Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) led off the inning by reaching on an error. Senior Shadi Azar (South San Francisco, C.A.) came in as a pinch hitter for Juan Hilario (Bronx, N.Y.) and roped a single to left. After two quick outs, Isaiah Arroyo (Tampa, F.L.) pinch hit for Ray Lang (Middlesex, N.J.) to negate the lefty-lefty matchup and delivered his first career hit with a RBI single to right driving in Reina.

Dowling answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with five runs. The home squad loaded the bases with no outs after two walks and a bunt single. A sacrifice fly to right plated one making it 3-1. Two batters later the Golden Lions second baseman Rob Constanzo (Nesconset, N.Y.) lined a single to left driving in two to make it 5-1. Costanzo finished the day at 2-4 with three RBI.  Constanzo's hit was followed by another two-run single that made it 7-1.

Dowling scratched out three more runs in the bottom of the sixth off senior reliever, Mark Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.). The righty surrendered three runs to give the Golden Lions a 10-1 lead. Senior Jose Toribio (West New York, N.J.) entered in relief of Reyes and got out the inning.

The Bears didn't go down quietly the rest of the way as junior, David Rivera (Bay Shore, N.Y.) pinch hit for Anthony Lantigua (Bellville, N.J.) and worked a leadoff walk. Carlos Flete (Jamaica, N.Y.) came in for Issac Pichardo (Passaic, N.J.) and was hit by a pitch that made it first and second. A wild pitch advanced the runners and set the table for Reina who lined a two-run single to right field making it 10-3. Two batters later, freshman, Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) roped one to left for an RBI single bringing in Reina to make the final score of 10-4.

Game two had a completely different feel. Bloomfield sent sophomore, Charles Castellano (Bayonne, N.J.) on the hill and he pitched a gem. The lefty hurled six innings, allowing just two earned runs on four hits while striking out five.

The two runs came on a John Cruz (Levittown, N.Y.) double to left center in the bottom of the fourth. Castellano held it at 2-0 and got out of the jam.

The Bears offense was held in check for most of the game by Dowling's pitcher Brendan Butler (West Sayville, N.Y.) but showed some fight in the top of the sixth. Pichardo led off with a single and a batter later Reina lined another single to right. Reina stole second and with one out Bloomfield had runners on second and third, down two and with Hilario and Montero due up. Hilario grounded out and Montero struck out swinging to end the inning and the Bears comeback threat.

Butler pitched a complete game (seven innings) shutting out Bloomfield while striking out five and allowing just three hits as he won the pitchers' duel.

The Bears take to the road in hopes of ending their losing streak in the City of Brotherly Love this Wednesday when they face USciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference double-header. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
