BEARS SPLIT ON SENIOR DAY AGAINST CLIPPERS

NEWARK, N.J. – The Bloomfield College baseball seniors played their final games at Westside Park last Saturday. Ray Lang (Middlesex, N.J.), Shadi Azar (South San Francisco, C.A.), Jose Toribio (West New York, N.J.), Carlos Flete (Jamaica, N.Y.), Juan Hilario (Bronx, N.Y.), Lucas Junger (Waretown, N.J.), Mark Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.), and Francesco Scudiero (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were each honored before their final conference games against Concordia College. The Bears split the day's double-header winning game one 11-4, while losing game two 4-3 in ten innings.

Toribio got the start in game one and continued to pitch well. The senior righty pitched seven innings, allowing just three earned runs in his team's victory. The offense continued to produce for him, picking up 17 hits in the game. Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) was the offensive star of the game going 5-for-5 with a homerun and two RBIs.

Bloomfield scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on Harry Montero's (Millville, N.J.) single that drove in Reina to make it 1-0. Montero had a big game as well picking up three hits in five at bats while driving in two.

Concordia strung some hits together in the third to take a 2-1 lead, but the Bears came right back in the bottom half of the inning and took a 3-2 lead after Lang drove in Hilario with an RBI single. They extended their lead in the fourth on Brandon Morales (Hialeah, N.J.) RBI single making it 4-2. Reina followed with a two-run homer to left to make it 6-2. The freshman sat back on a 0-2 curveball and sent it flying over the scoreboard for his team leading third homerun of the season.

Concordia picked up a run in the seventh on an RBI single making it 6-3 and the Bears answered right back with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-3. Anthony Lantigua (Bellville, N.J.) drove in two with a two-run single and Cris Cabral (Lodi, N.J.) had an RBI single.

Senior Mark Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) pitched the eighth for Bloomfield allowing a run but once again the Bears offense answered right back. Montero drove in his second run of the game with a single and Cabral drove in a run on an error by the Concordia shortstop to extend the lead to 11-4. Kyle Murzyn (Glassboro, N.J.) came in and closed out the win.

Junger got the start in game two. The three year member of the team also pitched well in his final game at Westside Park, pitching seven innings striking out eight and allowing just three runs.

Thanks to some aggressive base running, the Bears took an early 2-0 lead in the first. Morales swiped second and Lantigua stole home on the throw down. Morales advanced to third and then scored on a ground ball back to the pitcher.

After allowing an RBI single, Junger balked in a run to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth. One batter later, Concordia drove in a run on a single to take a 3-2 advantage.

Bloomfield tied the game up in the sixth as a Lang groundball to second scored Cabral making it 3-3.

Junger settled in after the fourth and cruised through the seventh to keep the game at 3-3.

Reyes came on in the eighth and after loading the bases with one out got an inning ending double play to escape the jam unscathed. The righty pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.

Murzyn entered the game in the ninth with runners on second and third with one out. Concordia tried to take the lead on a sacrifice fly but their runner was thrown out at the plate by Morales.

The Bears would eventually lose the game in the tenth after a solo homerun made it 4-3.

Bloomfield has three games remaining. They play Tuesday at Dominican College and then welcome Dowling College on Wednesday and Caldwell University on Thursday. Their final two games will be played at the beautiful Newark Bears stadium in Newark. Please come out and support the team through their final games.
