BEARS FALL IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE BATTLE TO THE HAWKS

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Bloomfield College women's basketball team concluded their non-conference games for the regular season with a 58-53 loss to Saint Anselm College on Monday afternoon at the Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

The road loss snapped the Bears four game winning streak and marked the fourth straight loss to a Northeast 10 opponent for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) top team as they fell to 13-5 overall. The Hawks improved their season record to 10-6 with their second victory over a CACC team this year.

Junior Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) led the road team with a game-high 14 points on 6-for-17 shooting from the field. Senior Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) notched her second consecutive double-double with 11 points (5-9 FG, 1-1 FT) and 10 rebounds including seven on the defensive glass. Classmate Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) rounded out the Bloomfield top scorers with 10 points while chipping in 3 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals. Freshman Deja McKenzie provided a lift off the bench going a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor for 7 points and added 4 rebounds.

The Hawks offense was paced by freshman Samnell Vonleh who scored a career-high 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting on the afternoon.

The teams had a rough time in the early going as they combined for 10 turnovers and just 4 field goals during the first seven minutes of the game. The Hawks ended the first quarter with an 8-3 run to take a 12-7 lead into the second frame.

The Bears battled but St. Anselm opened up a ten-point advantage in the second quarter, 29-19 with 1:53 remaining until the break. Iman Williams (Shreveport, La.) converted a layup in the paint to cut Bloomfield's deficit but Vonleh netted a free throw to give the Hawks a 30-21 edge as the teams went into the locker rooms.

Bloomfield came out strong to start the second half as they cut the home team's lead to four (31-27) after a Smith steal and layup on a fastbreak. The Hawks converted a three-point play to answer and extend the lead back to 34-27 with 6:15 on the clock. Bloomfield could not get over the hump with St. Anselm stretching their advantage to 47-37 by the end of the third quarter.

In fourth period, the Bears dug in their claws and found a 10-0 rally that drew the teams even after back-to-back buckets from beyond the arc by Smith for a 51-51 score. With 2:36 remaining in the game, the Hawks found seven straight free throws to cap the game as Smith could only bury one jumper in between as the Bloomfield offense sputtered.

Saint Anselm outshot Bloomfield 47.7 percent (21-of-44) to 41.1 percent (23-56) and converted more shots from the line (15) than the visitors attempted (6).  The Bears won the rebounding battle 32-27 while both teams committed 20 turnovers in the game with the Hawks holding a slight 17-15 edge in points of miscues.

The Bears return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Felician University in a CACC North Division matchup scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
