BEARS FALL ON THE ROAD TO LIU POST, 6-1

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore first baseman Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) belted a solo home run to right in the sixth inning but it was the only point of the day as the Bloomfield College Bears were defeated by the LIU Post baseball team, 6-1 for at the Pioneers Baseball Field in Brookville.

LIU Post wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on a sac-fly to left center that scored a runner who had reached on a leadoff single. Freshman right-hander, Anthony Maldonado (Newark, N.J.) got the start and surrendered another run to the Pioneers in the fourth inning that put his team in a 2-0 deficit.

Maldonado gave way to classmate, Justin Torres (Teaneck, N.J.) in the fifth and LIU Post quickly took advantage with a two-out, 2 RBI single that doubled their lead (4-0) although Torres struck out three batters in the inning.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Montero stepped to the plate and provided the Bears with their lone bright spot of the afternoon, down the right field line and over the fence to cut the margin to 4-1. The Pioneers (7-8) saw their starter, Dan Jagiello, keep Bloomfield in check for seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out nine batters.

LIU Post got back a run in the bottom seventh and tacked on an extra one in the eighth to defeat the Bears (2-8) for the second time this season.

Montero finished the day, 2-for-4 including his first homer of 2016 while junior Brandon Morales (Hialeah, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Isaac Pichardo (Passaic, N.J.) and Luis Hidalgo (Ridgefield, N.J.) each had a double for the Bears during the setback.

Head coach Jeff Watson and the Bears return to action on Saturday (Mar. 19) when they head back over the George Washington Bridge to take on Concordia College in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action of the season. The league doubleheader will be games three and four of an eight-game road trip for Bloomfield with the first pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. for Game One in Bronxville.
