BASEBALL OPENS FLORIDA TRIP WITH 5-2 LOSS TO STONEHILL

PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 8, 2016) – The Bloomfield College baseball team dropped a, 5-2 decision to Stonehill College in non-conference action at the Santaluces Complex in Palm Beach, Florida. The Bears opened their Spring Break trip in the Sunshine State giving up five stolen bases while being caught stealing four times.

Bloomfield fell to 1-2 with the setback while the Skyhawks improved to 5-5 with the win.

Bloomfield was led by sophomore second baseman Anthony Lantigua (Belleville, N.J.) and freshman center fielder Amir Garcia (Passaic, N.J.), who each recorded a hit and RBI, while sophomore first baseman Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) finished 1-for-4 with a run.

Junior righty Carlos Tejada (New York, N.Y.) took the loss for the Bears despite turning in a solid effort, as he struck out seven and gave up just three runs on four hits through six innings.

Stonehill scored the game's first runs in the fourth when a batter was hit by a pitch and subsequently stole second base. With two outs in the inning Stonehill belted an RBI single to drive in a run. The Skyhawks tacked on another score in the top of the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh as the Bears fell behind 5-0.

Bloomfield got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh as Montero got the rally started with a single and was moved to second when freshman Emil Lopez (Paramus, N.J.) reached base on an error. Junior Brandon Morales (Hialeah, Fla.) pinch hit and drew a walked to load the bases and then Lantigua hit a sacrifice fly to right field to record an RBI. Garcia then drove in Lopez with two outs to extend the Bears rally. Stonehill made a pitching charge and sent in sophomore righty, Matt Peters (Portsmouth, R.I.) who got the remaining out in the inning to get the Skyhawks out of the jam.

Junior Aubrey Solomon (Groton, Mass.) closed the door on Bloomfield as he pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save of the season.

The Bears regroup and travel to face the Panthers of Florida Tech on Wednesday, Mar 9 at 3:00 pm. The Panthers are currently riding a 10-game winning streak were they have outscored their opponents, 97-23.
