LITTLE FALLS, N.J. - It was quite the eventful Saturday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Bloomfield College Bears (5-21, 6-8) would not only sweep The University of the Sciences Philadelphia Devils (5-21, 2-10) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header, but they would also honor their seniors and induct Bloomfield College's late pioneer of the athletic department, Alfred R. Restaino Sr. into the CACC Hall of Fame.
Â
Carlos Tejada (New York, N.Y.) was dominant in game one picking up his first victory of the season. The right-hander went 7.1 innings allowing just two hits and one earned run.
Â
The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when
Luis Hidalgo (Ridgefield, N.J.) came in to score on a wild pitch to give Bloomfield a 1-0 lead.
Â
Bloomfield struck again in the sixth, extending their lead to 2-0 after Cristopher Cabral (Lodi, N.J.) scored on a throwing error by the Devils' second baseman.
Â
Tejada continued to cruise, retiring nine in a row after the fourth inning. He would run into some trouble in the eighth loading the bases with just one out. This would end his day as the Bears turned to freshman Anthony Maldanado (Newark, N.J.). Sciences would tack on one run off Maldanado with a single to left, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The freshman righty would bear down, retiring the next two batters, escaping the jam with the lead.
Â
Led by the red hot
Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.), Bloomfield would tack on two insurance runs to stretch their lead to 4-1. Montero led off with a double down the right field line and would come in to score on Issac Pichardo's (Passaic, N.J.) triple to deep left center.
Ben Thomas (Burlington, N.J) would bring home Pichardo with a sac fly to right.
Â
Maldanado would shut the door in the ninth, picking up his second save of the season as the Bears would go on to win 4-1.
Â
In game two, Bloomfield wasted no time getting on the board. Montero continued to swing a hot bat driving in two runs with a triple to deep left center to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Montero would then come in to score on a wild pitch, making it 3-0.
Â
The Devils would answer back in the top of the second, plating two on a throwing error by
Anthony Lantigua (Bellville, N.J.) trimming the Bloomfield lead to 3-2.
Â
Bloomfield would score again in the third extending their lead to 4-2 on a wild pitch that allowed
Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) to score from third. The Bears would tack on runs in the sixth and seventh. Lantigua doubled in the sixth to drive in Pichardo, making it 5-3. Reina doubled in the seventh to bring home
Luke Loughery (Sussex, N.J.) and extend the lead to 6-3.
Â
Steven Acosta (Lakewood, N.J.) pitched very well. The sophomore pitched out of several jams, continually picking his defense up. Acosta pitched into the ninth but only managed to record one out before being relieved by
Robin Nunez (Passaic, N.J.).
Â
The Devils were able to string together a couple of clutch hits and tie the game at 6-6. Nunez settle down to hold it at 6-6, setting the stage for some heroics.
Â
Loughery led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and then stole second. With one out, Reina stepped to the plate and delivered a walk-off single up the middle to give the Bears a 7-6 victory.
Â
The sweep puts the Bears right in the thick of the playoff hunt, with six conference games remaining.
Â
Next up, the Bears will travel to Queens to take on the Queens College Knights for a nonconference battle Tuesday. Game time is set for 3 P.M.
