NEWARK, N.J. – The Bloomfield College Bears baseball team dropped a non-conference single game Wednesday at West Side Park to the Golden Lions of Dowling College, 13-5. The home team fell to an 11-23 overall record on the season while the visitors improved to 17-19.
Dowling opened up the scoring in the first inning as a two-out 2 RBI double put Bloomfield down 2-0. Bears answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame after Ahmir Garcia drew a lead off walk and then stole second base.
Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) drove a shot over the left fielder's head for an RBI double to cut the home team's deficit in half 2-1.
The Golden Lions tacked on another three runs in the top of the second inning that put Bloomfield in a 5-1 hole. The Bears threatened in the bottom half as
Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. A wild pitch advanced each runner one base as
Luke Loughery (Sussex, N.J.) came in to score. Reina then laced a 2 RBI single thru the left side and advanced to second on the throw home. Montero hit another ball thru the left side but Reina was thrown out at home ending the Bears rally at 5-4.
Dowling surged in the sixth inning for three runs, put up one more in the eighth and four in the ninth to take a commanding 13-4 lead. Bloomfield added a run in the bottom of the ninth that sealed the non-conference setback.
Charles Castellano (Bayonne, N.J.) (2-3) picked up the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in four innings of work with three walks and one strikeout.
Bloomfield will travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. Friday to play their final non-conference battle of the year when they face Pace University at 3:00 pm.
