BEARS SLIDE PAST CALDWELL IN HOME OPENER SWEEP AS PICHARDO RECORDS 100TH CAREER HIT

NEWARK, NJ – The Bloomfield College Bears baseball team played their first games at Westside Park on Friday the 13thand thrilled the fans to a sweep of Caldwell University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action. Bloomfield took Game 1 by storm with a 14-2 outburst while the Cougars made it interesting in Game 2 but Isaac Pichardo (Passaic, NJ) registered his 100thcareer hit and helped the Bears seize a, 9-7 win to cap the home opener.

Freshman pitcher, Darwin Matos (Clifton, NJ) tossed a gem in Game 1, going six full innings and allowing just 1 hit while striking out four and walking four. Matos (1-0) recorded his first career win in a Bloomfield uniform and benefitted from an explosive offensive output from his team, led by Pichardo who belted a solo homerun in the 7thinning. The Bears (9-12-1, 4-6 CACC) had built a commanding, 7-0 lead before the senior's long ball that put him at 99 NCAA Division II hits and the home squad cruised to the 15-hit victory.

The stage was set for Game 2 and Pichardo delivered early with a single to left in the 1stinning that gave him the 100-hit milestone and also drove in classmate, Cristopher Cabral (Lodi, NJ). The Bears were up, 3-0 after one and seemed poised for another dominating offensive performance when they tacked on four more in the 2ndinning but Caldwell (2-25, 2-14 CACC) took advantage of starter, Steven Acosta (Lakewood, NJ) by storming back with four runs of their own in the 4thand tied the game at 7-7.

Junior transfer, Brelin Dixon (Newark, NJ) came on in relief in the 5thand shut down the Cougars rally allowing Bloomfield a shot at going back in front. The home team did just that in the bottom of the 6thwhen a sac-fly by senior Harry Montero (Millville, NJ) scored Azmir Garcia (Passaic, NJ) and classmate Anthony Lantigua (Belleville, NJ), who beat out a throw at the plate. Junior, Yordani Nicasio (Paterson, NJ) picked up his 2ndsave of the season as he closed out the 7thinning.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday, April 14that Westside when Felician University comes to pay a visit.
