PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Bloomfield College men's soccer team were defeated in overtime by the Griffins from Chestnut Hill on a set piece off a corner kick Saturday afternoon. The Golden Goal came with less than one minute remaining in overtime and handed the Bears their third consecutive loss to start the 2018 campaign.
The home team saw a laser beam shot from outside the 18 by Pedro Dutra just after 'one minute remaining' had been announced by the CHC Campus Field PA Announcer. The ball found its way over the head of Bloomfield's freshman keeper,
Robert Kornel (Berlin, Germany) who could only watch the score sail into the back top-right corner of the net after being played on a corner kick to Dutra in open space on the pitch.
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rivals were each playing their first match in league play and the Griffins moved to 1-0 in conference while evening their overall record to 2-2. The teams battled to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation and were heading to another overtime period, when the home team was awarded a corner off a play deep on the Bears defensive side. The Griffins took full advantage and ended the contest moments later.
Bloomfield team captains
Adrian Smart (Mandeville, Jamaica) and
Bryan Medina (Dover, NJ) each had a shot on goal for the day as the visitor's offense struggled with only three shots on goal in the match.
Still looking for the first win of the season, Bloomfield will welcome the friendly confines of Foley Field in their next test on Saturday, September 15. The home opener will feature an afternoon CACC battle with Georgian Court University. The Lions will be hungry for revenge after being eliminated from the conference tournament a year ago by the Bears in the opening round. First touch is set for 3:30 pm in Bloomfield.
