BEARS TOO STRONG IN THE DEN; UPSET REGIONALLY RANKED DOMINICAN, 99-90

BLOOMFIELD, NJ– In an electrifying atmosphere inside The Den Tuesday evening, the Bloomfield College men's basketball team defeated the Chargers from Dominican College, 99-90. The battle for supremacy in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division left the Bears, 16-9 overall and 14-2 in league action, with sole possession of 1stplace in the north. Dominican, who came into the contest ranked 8thin the East Region of the D2SIDA poll, fell to 17-7 on the year and 12-4 in conference matches.

Like a heavyweight championship, the two teams duked it out in the first half with Bloomfield carving out an early 15-8 lead but the Chargers quickly erased that deficit with a 13-3 gallop to go up, 21-18. By halftime, the home team had rebuilt their advantage and jogged to the locker rooms holding an 8-point lead (46-38). Both teams shot around 41.0 percent from the field in the opening frame as the Bears found success from deep, going 6-of-13 to edge in front of the visitors. Senior guard, Keith Washington (Philadelphia, PA) led the way with 13 first-half points and classmate Kavione Green (Amityville, NY) cleaned up on boards with 9 rebounds which included eight on the defensive glass.

Dominican knew they were in for an up-hill battle and came out in the 2ndhalf determined, running off the period's first six points (46-44). But the regionally ranked Chargers would get no closer as the Bears fed off the energy of the crowd and pushed their lead back up to as many as 15 (98-83) after a Rich Chapman (Newark, NJ) layup. The night belong to Bloomfield and so did the victory after the buzzer sounded and first place in the north had been decided.

Washington finished with a game-high 29 points along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Green, who is ranked 7thin the nation in total rebounds, recorded his 11thdouble-double on the year with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Chapman had a modest 17 points, going 4-of-4 from the free throw line and junior guard Dontay Julius (Linden, NJ) had 15 points and 8 rebounds.

Bloomfield, who are now masters of their own post-season destiny, welcome the 5thranked team in the east region on Saturday, February 23. The Jefferson Rams come to The Den on Senior Day for a highly anticipated CACC battle which could ultimately determine the overall No 1 team in the league after the 3:00 pm tip.
