BLOOMFIELD, NJ– Senior forward,
Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, MD) reached a career milestone Tuesday night, eclipsing 1,000 points in an, 84-71 setback against Dominican College. The Bears lost their fifth consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game and moved to 5-20 overall for the year. Bloomfield fell to 4-12 in league action and will miss post-season play for the first time since becoming an NCAA Division II program.
McKenzie started the evening needing just six to reach 1,000 career points and after Dominican (13-12, 11-5 CACC) began the game up 5-0, the senior forward went to work, rattling off 8 to pull her team to within 9-8 of the visitors. A double head-fake and drive to the basket gave the Baltimore native the sixth point she needed and the game paused to acknowledge her accomplishment. "I'm prod of Deja and what she has achieved in her career here at Bloomfield," head coach
Vanessa Watson said of her veteran player. "Scoring 1,000 points is not something everyone can do in college, so she should be proud as well."
The Chargers finished out the first quarter up 16-13 and went on to extend their lead by the half to, 40-25. Despite putting together a 29-point fourth quarter, the Bears could not cut their deficit to single digits and the CACC North Division leaders picked up their 11
thleague win.
McKenzie finished her milestone day with a game-high, 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. Freshman shooter,
Jaylah Bennett (Newark, NJ) continued her first year progression, netting 21 points, which included 5-of-9 from long range. Classmate,
Caitlin Townes (Newark, NJ) chipped in 11 points to round out Bloomfield's top scorers.
Next on the agenda for the Bears, will be nationally ranked Jefferson as they come to The Den for a Saturday afternoon match up. Bloomfield will celebrate Senior Day prior to the 1:00 pm tip-off with the Rams and celebrate McKenzie and the other three program seniors.
