CALDWELL, NJ – The Bloomfield College women's basketball team finished their 2019-20 season on a high-note, seizing a 72-64 victory over Caldwell University Saturday. The regular season finale left the Bears with a 6-22 overall record and 5-14 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests. The Cougars dropped to 8-20 on the year and 8-11 in league matches as they get set for postseason play as the north division's #3 seed.
The Bears commanded the game from the onset, putting up a 21-15 first quarter on Coach Mark A. Corino Court. The advantage grew to ten points (45-35) as the teams headed off to the locker rooms for halftime. Dashanique Ruffin (Paterson, NJ) carried the offensive workload as she netted 15 points across the first two quarters of play on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Sophomore forward, Siani Smith (Burlington, NJ) chipped in 11 first-half points to help the visitors build up their lead.
The third quarter belonged to the Cougars as they came roaring back with a 15-6 frame and pulled to within, 51-50. The Bears offense stalled in the period, shooting a dismal 16.7 percent from the field (2-for-12). Head Coach Vanessa Watson had the team dig down deep and urged them to leave it all out on the court as the season was coming to a close and Bloomfield responded with a 21-14 final quarter to seal their second consecutive win.
Ruffin finished the game with a game-high 21 points to go alongside 9 rebounds. Smith finished her day with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists while sophomore Jaylah Bennett (Newark, NJ) had 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.
Bloomfield concluded their regular season with two solid wins over CACC playoff teams. Bennett led the team in scoring with 11.8 ppg followed by classmate Caitlin Townes (Newark, NJ) with 9.6 ppg. Ruffin led the team in rebounding at 8.8 rpg and was close to averaging a double-double this season chipping in 9.4 ppg. All three players return next year for the Bears as they look to continue to build and return to playoff form in 2020-21.
