TAVARES GOES YARD IN BEARS 17-4 NON-CONFERENCE SETBACK AGAINST ADELPHI

GARDEN CITY, NY - The Bloomfield College baseball team travelled to Adelphi University Wednesday afternoon and suffered a, 17-4 setback on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The non-conference loss left the Bears with a 1-4 record while the Panthers improved to 3-1 in 2020.

The contest was called after six-and-a-half innings due to darkness but the home team used back-to-back six-run innings to start the game and seize early control.

Bloomfield put Adelphi in a 1-0 hole after the top of the first on a Julius Puryear (West Orange, NJ) double to center field that scored Javell Barnes (Elizabeth, NJ) who singled to lead-off the game. The Panthers pounced on Bears' starter, Alex Medina (Bayonne, NJ) in the bottom of the first, posting six runs to take the lead. Medina lasted only one and a third and gave up 9 runs, all earned, on 7 hits and walked 5 batters.

Jayden Jacobs (Elizabeth, NJ) came on in relief in the 2nd inning with the bases loaded and gave up a grand-slam to the first batter he faced. Jacobs day ended with him giving up 6 runs, only one earned, on 5 hits and struck out 2 batters.

Darwin Tavarez (Garfield, NJ) hit his first homerun of the year in the 2nd inning and Barnes finished up the day, 3-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.

Head Coach Jeff Watson and the Bears return to action Thursday (Mar. 5) at 3 p.m., when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a three-game series that concludes with a scheduled double-header on Saturday (March 7).
