NEWARK, NJ – Bloomfield College baseball returned to WestSide Park Wednesday afternoon to host their Senior Day Celebration in a double-7's matchup with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division foe, Jefferson University.
The Bears honored the careers of
Tyree Bradley (West Orange, NJ),
Tristan Brandt (New York, NY),
Jonas Espinal (Ridgefield Park, NJ),
Luis Garcia (Paterson, NJ),
Bryan Guzman (North Bergen, NJ),
Elvis Lopez (Randolph, NJ),
Edwin Melendez (Manalapan, NJ),
Angel Murray (Santa Isabel, PR) and
Justin Sanchez (Kearny, NJ) before the start of the first game.
GAME ONE:
Bloomfield rallied to capture a, 12-11 game one win after a five-run 8th inning ignited by a three-run homer from Bradley. Sanchez then belted a walk-off double to secure the win in true Senior Day dramatic fashion.
The Bears got on the board in the third, when Brandt drove in a run with a single to tie the game at 1-1. Brandt and Espinal later came around to score to put the home team up 3-1. The Rams bounced back with three runs in the fourth but Bloomfield regained the advantage in the fifth when Brandt came around to knot the score at 4-4 before Murray drove in a run to put his team up, 5-4. The see-saw battle had Jefferson up again after 6 innings but Lopez quickly erased the Bears deficit with a 2 RBI double to right-center in the 7
thand the teams were again tie at the end of regulation setting up the 8
th inning senior heroics.
Suriel Sleiter (Pleasantville, NJ) secured the win on the mound to even out his record at 2-2 for the season and he also hit a homerun in the 8
th to start the rally.
Justin Rivera (Clifton, NJ) went 3-for-3 in game one with 3 RBI while Brandt went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a double and two runs scored. Lopez ended game one, with a double and 2 RBI while Murray picked up an RBI after going 1-for-3 and drawing two walks.
GAME TWO:
Game 2 was a horse of a different color as the Jefferson sticks came alive with 12 runs in the opening frame and the Rams handed the Bears a 20-3 loss to close out regular season play. Murray homered in the bottom of the first for his 5
th of the year.
Nick Johns (Linden, NJ) doubled to left field in the 2
nd to drive in a run and then a wild pitch brought in Bloomfield's third run of the game.
Sanchez took the loss in game 2 moving his overall record to 0-1 on the mound.
The Bears baseball squad wrapped up their regular season with a 17-29 overall record and a 12-13 CACC mark. They earned the three-seed in the North Division and will travel to Felician University Friday for the first round of the CACC playoffs. The doubleheader time is still to be determined. Bloomfield's top hitter, Bradley concluded the regular season first in the conference in batting average (.411), homeruns (17), on base percentage (0.554), RBI (60) and slugging percentage (.919). He is ranked 5
th in the nation in slugging percentage.
