Baseball Swept By Dominican In Home Opener At West Side Park

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Bears baseball team played their home opener on Wednesday at West Side Park and dropped two games to Dominican University. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match-ups left Bloomfield with an 0-4 overall record and league mark while the Chargers improved to 9-17 overall and 4-2 in conference play. 

The Bears offense saw some life in front of the home crowd after being shutout a day earlier on the road and pushed across 2 runs in the first inning. Giordano Compres smacked a single up the middle that scored Lixander Mendez and Jason Vilafane. Mendez reached on a single to start the home half of the first and Vilafane was hit by a pitch. Bloomfield picked up another run in the bottom of the 2nd when Juan Romero singled to right field driving in Derick Leocadio and the score was, 4-3 in favor of the visitors. A Mendez single up the middle in the 4th capped the Bears scoring as the rightfielder drove in 2 more runs. The Chargers seized control of Game 1 with a 6-run fifth inning and went on to take the contest, 17-5 in 7 innings. Kevin Herrera took the mound in the home opener and picked up the loss after surrendering 11 runs on 10 hits in 4 innings of work. 

Compres picked up another RBI in the first inning of Game 2 as he drove in Mendez to put Bloomfield on the board. Robert Jimenez would then single to right field to drive in Vilafane before Dominican put the game out of reach with 6 runs in the 2nd inning. The visitors went on to take Game 2, 26-2 in two hours and fifty minutes. 

The next Bloomfield outing will be on the road against Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday, March 30. The CACC doubleheader in Delaware is. Scheduled for a 12:00 pm first pitch.
