John M. Downey joins the Bloomfield College baseball coaching staff in 2025. He is a former NYPD Sergeant and a dedicated accomplished baseball coach with a wealth of experience spanning collegiate, high school, and travel baseball. John has built his reputation on leadership, player development, and commitment to the game.

In 2024, he was the Head Baseball Coach at Saint Joseph’s University Brooklyn, where he played a key role in shaping the program. Since 2023, he has also served as the Head Baseball Coach for the Jersey Shore Stallions in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL), leading the team to a playoff appearance in the 2024 season. Under John tutelage was able to get Anthony Manisero signed to a pro contract with the New York Boulders of the Frontier League. 

John’s experience extends beyond coaching, as he worked as an amateur professional baseball scout for the San Diego Padres from 2021 to 2023, evaluating talent and contributing to the organizations player development efforts.

Before stepping into collegiate coaching, John honed his skills at the high school level, coaching at: Poly Prep, McKee Staten Island Tech and Saint Peters Boys (Staten Island).

Prior to coaching high school baseball, he spent ten years coaching travel baseball and owned the Stallions Baseball Club on Staten Island. Under his leadership, the team won 18 travel baseball tournaments, placed 22 players at the collegiate level. John showcased his ability to develop young talent. He also led the 11-year-old Little League All-Stars at SSLL to a New York State Championship.

As a player, John was a semi-pro pitcher in the Goya League with the Brooklyn Indians and had two professional baseball tryouts with the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets. His collegiate career saw him pitch at Molloy College, where he later returned in 2023 to complete his bachelors degree in Criminal Justice and Economics. His early playing success included being named to the USA Roberto Clemente All-Star Team in 1996. John was a two sport athlete in high school while attending Port Richmond playing baseball and football. 

Beyond baseball, John had a distinguished career in law enforcement, retiring as a Sergeant from the New York City Police Department (NYPD). He now applies his leadership and investigative skills in the private sector as the owner of Stallion S & I, a security and investigations company.

John resides on Staten Island with his wife, Christina, and their two sons, John Jr. and Ryan.
