Damien Betances enters his second year as Assistant Track and Field coach here at Bloomfield College.  Prior to Bloomfield, Coach Betances held positions as both a head and assistant coach in track and field and/or head cross-country coach from 2000-2015.

As a first-year head coach in 2002 at Bergen Technical High School, he was awarded the Bergen County Scholastic League Coach of the Year Award while guiding his girls squad to an undefeated season and League Championship then following up the following year with a League Championship with his boys squad.  Later, as an assistant track and field coach at Teaneck High School, he was integral to bringing the boys program to local, state, and national prominence.  He guided several long and triple jumpers, as well as, long sprinters and middle distance runners to school, league, county, and state titles and records.  Four of his sprint medley teams earned All-American status between 2007 and 2010.  As a second-year head coach of the cross country program at Teaneck High School, Betances earned both Big North Conference and Bergen County Coach of the Year honors.

A resident of West Orange, Coach Betances holds a B.A in Humanities from Saint Peter’s University and an M.A. in Counseling from Montclair State University.  After having taught history for 11 years at Teaneck High School, he has been a full-time school counselor at Kearny High School in Kearny, NJ since the fall of 2015.  Coach Betances lives with his wife Olivia and their son Montez.

His passion for teaching and mentoring students drives his work daily and he brings that energy to his coaching craft.  Coaching Track and Field is secondary to building up productive young men and women to strive for excellence.  Along with the rest of the coaching staff, Betances is looking forward to making Bloomfield College the premier collegiate track and field program in New Jersey and eventually beyond.
