Carmen Smith, a 2009 Graduate of Saint Peter’s University, begins her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Bears under Coach Dave Caputo.
Coach Smith helped lead the Bears to a Regular Season three peat championship in her 3rd season last year. The program has also amassed an impressive (48-9) conference record in the three years of the Caputo regime.
In her first year on staff, Smith assisted the Bears to a 20-win season. The 2013-2014 season produced both the CACC North Division title and the CACC Conference Tournament Championship, both first time achievements since the school became a member of the NCAA’s Division II in 2002. The program also qualified for the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament for the first time in school history. In 2016, Smith also assisted in leading the bears to their second NCAA tournament appearance, setting program records in overall wins (24) and conference wins/record with an (18-1) mark. Since arrival under Caputo 2013-2014, Bloomfield has amassed the second best conference record in the entire east region with an incredible (48-9) mark.
Carmen’s main responsibilities include assisting in pre and post season player development, organizing community service projects, arranging fundraising mail outs, handle all travel arrangements, recruiting and all administrative basketball duties.
Coach Smith is a former Division I guard who played at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, N.J. and attended Dean College before her time with the Peacocks. Smith played two seasons at Dean College before attending Saint Peter’s and she led the nation in assists from 2005-2007 and was second, nationally in steals during that same period.
Prior to joining Caputo’s staff, Smith is coming off a stint as an assistant coach at Queens College in Flushing NY, where her athletic department recognized her as “Assistant Coach of the Year for Women Sports” for the 2012-2013 season. Her responsibilities were but not limited to assisting in pre and post season workouts with guards, organizing and recruiting male practice squad. Supervised and coordinated all administration for spring camp, arranged and organized basketball clinics, assisted in recruiting, managed social network page, and lastly composed fundraising letters and organized community service projects.
A graduate of the WBCA “so you want to be a coach” program in 2010, Smith, also graduated with her Bachelors degree in Business Management in 2009. Additionally, Smith earned her Masters degree in Sports Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University located in Teaneck, N.J. in 2011.
Smith, is also a certified high school referee for the state of New Jersey IAABO Board 33, and a licensed massage therapist
Smith is excited about the upcoming season, after assisting Bloomfield to their first conference championship in the Division II era of the program 2013-2014 and being named regular season north division champs three years in a row.
