ORANGEBURG, NY: The women's basketball team held a halftime lead against the Dominican College Chargers Thursday night in a battle of two clubs with unblemished records in CACC play. But when the final horn sounded, it was the Chargers who had come out on top, as the Lady Deacons fell to 2-1 in conference action with a 70-61 defeat at Dominican.
Holding a 15-9 advantage in the early stages of the contest, the Lady Deacons allowed Dominican back into the game, surrendering an 13-2 run by the Chargers to put Bloomfield in a 22-17 hole. Coach Wimberly's squad would quickly get back on track, though, outscoring Dominican 13-8 over the rest of the period to take a 33-30 lead into the break.
But the lead would be short-lived, as the Lady Deacons were unable to stop an outstanding second half of shooting from the Chargers. Dominican was able to connect on 61% of their field goal attempts including 3-7 from the beyond the arch in the final 20 minutes of play, pulling away in the waning minutes to preserve the nine-point victory.
Senior
Milani Malik led the Lady Deacons with 15 points off the bench, connecting on three of her seven tries from three. Rookie Dre'Shonda Williams posted her best performance of her Bloomfield career, notching 13 points and three rebounds, while
Emily Horrocks finished the night in double-figures with 10 points in the loss.
The team returns to action Saturday, January 9, with a home game against conference rival Chestnut Hill College. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
