WILMINGTON, DE - The women's basketball team closed their regular season with a 72-59 loss at the hands of the Wilmington University Wildcats Sunday afternoon, in their final tuneup for next week's CACC Tournament. The loss drops the Lady Deacons to 11-15 overall, and 11-8 in CACC play, good for the number three seed in the postseason tournament.
It was a tale of two halves for Coach Wimberly's club, who led by as many as seven points in the first 20 minutes of play. The Lady Deacons were clicking on the offensive end of the floor, shooting 45% from the field and draining three of their four first-half free-throw attempts. The Wildcats couldn't quite keep pace, and trailed Bloomfield 38-35 at the break.
The second half was a much different story, though, as the Wildcats were able to quickly gain a lead they would not relinquish in the early stages of the second half. Wilmington was able to keep the Lady Deacons at bay by connecting on 13 of their 15 second-half free-throw attempts, using their freebies to mount and maintain a significant advantage. The Lady Deacons were unable to put together a comeback effort, shooting 26% from the floor over the game's final 20 minutes and coming up short on their three three-point tries. The loss clinched the number three seed for Bloomfield, who finishes as the middle club in a three-way tie for second-place in the CACC North Division standings heading into tournament play.
Jamila Garrett made the most of her starting role in the loss, notching 13 points and pulling down six rebounds while swatting two blocks.
Robyn Burton matched Garrett with 13 points of her own while dishing out a pair of assists, and Dre'Shonda Williams notched 10 points off the bench in the loss.
The Lady Deacons return to the hardwood Tuesday night for the opening round of the CACC Tournament. The club will travel to Dominican to take on the Lady Chargers, a club BC split their regular season series with in 09'-10'. Tip-off for Tuesday's playoff clash is set for 7:00 PM.
