McDaniel shines as Lady Deacons top Dominican

ORANGEBURG, NY (February 3, 2011) - The women's basketball team stayed perfect in CACC play and ran their winning streak to nine consecutive games Thursday night, as they used a breakout second half to top the Dominican College Lady Chargers in a 65-52 road victory.  The win moves Bloomfield to 13-5 overall and 11-0 in conference play.

The Lady Deacons were once again able to slow Dominican's strong perimeter attack, limiting the Lady Chargers to just 27% shooting from the field over the first half.  But their counterparts were equal to the task on the defensive end, stifling the Bloomfield offense and forcing the North Division's top club into a 28% shooting performance.  The Lady Deacon were still able to control the action, leading by as many as seven points and never tailing in the period.  Dominican was able to orchestrate a late run to knot the score at 25 a side, sending the defensive battle into the break gridlocked at 25-25.

It would be a different story in the second half, as both clubs were able to solve the riddles that had plagued them on the offensive end.  Both teams finished the game shooting over 45% from the floor over the final 20 minutes, the Lady Chargers trying desperately to give Bloomfield its first CACC loss.  Dominican was able to grab hold of a slim one-point advantage at 32-31 three minutes in, but the Lady Deacons would answer with a 12-5 run, eventually widening the gap to as many as 11 points and putting to bed any hopes of an upset.  Bloomfield never led by less than nine in the final seven minutes, earning a tough road victory and remaining unbeaten in conference action.

"This was a tough win for us, but we persevered and got it done," Bloomfield head coach Jerry Wimberly said.  "Dominican played tough defensively, and had us under control in the first half.  But we made some adjustments, and they worked out.  We've got another big test this weekend, so we need to be prepared and ready to go."

Senior center Tiffany McDaniel played her finest game of her last season at Bloomfield in the win, dominating the paint to the tune of 19 points and 18 rebounds to go with a pair of blocks.  Dre'Shonda Williams continued to see her play improve in the season's second half, totaling 10 points, while Vanessa Lamison and Shaniqua Bacote each tallied eight points in the victory.

The team returns to action Saturday, February 5 when they travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to take on CACC South Division rival Holy Family University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
