PHILADELPHIA, PA (February 5, 2011) - The men's basketball team improved to 12-7 overall and 8-2 in CACC play Saturday afternoon, as they notched an 87-74 road victory over South Division foe Holy Family University.
The Tigers were able to keep pace with the potent Bloomfield attack in the early going, matching the Deacons bucket for bucket through the first ten minutes of action. But the North Division-leading Deacons exploded with a 23-6 run to open up a 41-23 lead. Freshman forward
Mike Williams led the charge, notching 11 points in the opening frame to help build the double-digit cushion. Holy Family would answer with a run of their own to close the half, cutting the lead to 44-36 going into the break.
The momentum stayed with the home team as the second half opened, as the Tigers chipped away at the deficit to eventually knot the score at 62 apiece with just over nine minutes remaining. But after an eight-point performance in the first half, senior guard
Ryan Rodrigues erupted for 15 points in the final 20 minutes to help the Deacons engineer an emphatic run to close the contest. The Bloomfield defense allowed just three Holy Family field goals the rest of the way, the group outscoring the Tigers 25-12 to pick up the double-digit road win.
Rodrigues finished the day 9-17 from the field and 6-11 from beyond the arc, his 25 points leading all scorers. Williams and
Matt Wafula helped solidify the frontcourt scoring effort, posting 13 points apiece in the victory.
Gage Daye and
Steve Henderson rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points each, while
Ahmad Harris put forth an exceptional eight-point, eight-rebound, nine-assist effort to round out the balanced onslaught.
The Deacons return to action Monday, February 7 with a home contest against CACC North Division rival Nyack College. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
