Lady Deacons edge Nyack 56-50

BLOOMFIELD, NJ (February 7, 2011) - The women's basketball team improved to 14-6 overall and 12-1 in CACC play Monday evening, as they swept the season series with the Nyack College Lady Warriors in a 56-60 home victory.

The visitors were able to keep pace with the North Division's best club in the early going, the Lady Deacons unable to execute one of their seemingly customary first half runs that cripple their opposition.   A quick Bloomfield spurt with seven minutes remaining gave the home team a nine-point advantage, and another 13-6 run to close the period gave the Lady Deacons a 39-25 halftime cushion.

It appeared Bloomfield was on its way to a repeat of the club's double-digit victory over Nyack on January 11, as the Lady Deacons opened up a 17-point advantage and remained up 11 with 12 minutes remaining.  But the Lady Warriors clawed their way back into the contest, slicing the lead to a slim 43-42 advantage with four minutes to play.  A clash that had once seemed like a foregone conclusion now hung in the balance, the game anyone's to win.

It was the Lady Deacons who answered the call, as Tiffany McDaniel's layup with three minutes remaining put Bloomfield back up three.  A Dre'Shonda Williams jumper on the next possession moved the advantage to 47-42, and free-throws by Vanessa Lamison and Robyn Burton completed the 6-0 run and gave the home team a 49-42 lead with 44 seconds remaining.  Nyack was unable to connect on numerous desperation attempts, the Lady Deacons icing the game from the free-throw line to escape with the six-point win.

"We picked up a good victory tonight, but I think we know we could have played better," Bloomfield head coach Jerry Wimberly said.  "Give Nyack a lot of credit.  They played us extremely tough tonight, but we hung in there and stuck it out.  We could have folded when they made their run, but we stayed strong.  That's a great sign."

Williams continued her resurgence in the victory, going for a game-high 16 points.  Lamison was the second Lady Deacon in double-figures, netting 13 points and swiping a game-high six steals in the triumph.

Bloomfield returns to action Wednesday, February 9 with a home contest against CACC North Division foe Concordia College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
