Bridgeport tops Deacons 79-68

BOX SCORE

The Bloomfield College Men's Basketball team fell to 0-3 on the young season Wednesday night, as they dropped a 79-68 road decision to the University of Bridgeport in a non-conference matchup.

The Deacons were able to match Bridgeport throughout much of the opening half, with Bloomfield holding a lead of high as seven points over the course of the frame.  But the Purple Knights notched the final basket of the half, netting a three-point attempt to take a 39-36 advantage into the intermission.  It would be the closest the visitors would come to picking up their first victory of the 2012-2013 season, as Bridgeport would engineer a 9-2 run to open the final 20 minutes of play and take a 48-38 lead they would not relinquish.  Bloomfield would cut the deficit to four points at 53:49 with 11:30 to play, but the home team would again push the cushion to double-figures with a 10-3 spurt, putting the game out of reach despite a pair of double-figure scorers for the Deacons in their third consecutive setback to begin the campaign.

Sophomore guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) led Bloomfield with 17 points on the evening, going 5-12 from the field and 5-7 from the free-throw line to pace the offense in 29 minutes.  Fellow sophomore Stacey Upshaw-Goree (Lindenwold, N.J.) posted a career-high 15 points off the bench in 27 minutes, shooting 6-14 from the floor and pulling down five rebounds on the night.

Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, November 17, when they welcome non-conference opponent Adelphi University for the club's first home contest of the season.  Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
