PHILADELPHIA, P.A. – The Bloomfield College women's basketball team bounced back from a two game slide with a 78-56 victory over the Griffins of Chestnut Hill on Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action. Freshman
De'Andra Humphries (Boston, Mass.) netted 18 points in her first career start for the Bears and junior guard,
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, V.A.) notched her first double-double of the year, adding 17 points and 12 rebounds to the Bloomfield effort. The setback dropped the Griffins to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Bears improved to 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in CACC contests.
Bloomfield College trailed early in the match but used a 12-0 run, capped by a Wilson fast-break lay up to seize a 22-11 advantage with 7:50 remaining in the half. Humphries closed out the scoring in the opening stanza, draining 1-out of-2 from the charity stripe to send the Bears to the lockeroom up by eight, 35-27. The dynamic duo of Wilson and Humphries split 22 points evenly in the first half and collectively shot 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. On the Chestnut Hill side of the ball freshman guard
Nina Mazzarelli (West Chester, Pa.) went for 11 points in the frame as well and tried to keep her team within striking distance heading into the break.
After the intermission, Bloomfield opened up with a 21-6 spurt that ballooned the lead to 23, 56-33 with 12:25 left to play. Chestnut Hill College was powerless the rest of the way, never getting closer than 15 as the Bears finished with a 22-point advantage, 78-56 and their first CACC win of the 2014-2015 campaign.
Four out-of five Bloomfield starters finished in double-figures including sophomore guard
Morgan Taylor (Paterson, N.J.) who pitched in a career-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Senior center
Tierra Scott (Bear, Del.) contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and six steals for the Bears, who collected 23 offensive rebounds as they doubled the Griffins output on the boards (48-24).
On Chestnut Hill's side of the ball, Mazzarelli finished with a career-high 23 points on 4-of-7 (57.1%) shooting from the field and 13-of-14 (92.9%) shooting from the line. The Bloomfield College defense held senior guard
Olivia Gorczynski (Parlin, N.J.), who came into the game averaging 19.0 points-per-game (PPG) to rank fourth in the CACC, to only seven points on 2-of-13 shooting (15.4%).
