BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The Bloomfield College women's basketball team pulled off an exciting 60-56 victory against the Tigers of Holy Family this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action. The win was the Deacons first against Holy Family in 9 years and gave Bloomfield sole possession of first place in the CACC North Division. The loss is the second for the Tigers in consecutive CACC games (10-2) and drops their overall record to 12-7 while the Deacons improve to 10-3 in conference action and 12-8 overall.
Tierra Scott (Bear, DE) led the way for Bloomfield pouring in a game-high 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds on the afternoon. Senior guard
Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, NJ) added 13 points to cause and guards,
Morgan Taylor (Paterson, NJ) and
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, VA) came up big with 9 points apiece to round out the Deacons top scorers. On the Tigers side of the ball, Maggie Serratelli dropped 13 points going 5-for-10 shooting from the field and Sarah Pawlak snatched a game-high 9 rebounds.
Slow out the gate in the opening period, Bloomfield spotted the Tigers 6 points (6-0) before Wilson got the Deacons on the board with a running layup down the lane, later netting two freethrows to draw Bloomfield even with the Tigers (8-8) at the 13:35 minute mark. The Deacons would seize control with a 15-9 run down the final five minutes of the opening period, heading to the lockeroom with a 32-27 spread and a home crowd on their feet. Bloomfield was out-rebounded in the first half 22-14 but played solid defense creating 8 steals and 13 turnovers to balance out the action on the court.
Wilson scored all of her nine points in the opening stanza but the Deacons would lean on Scott and Castro to hold Holy Family at bay during the second period. The Tigers found themselves down by as much as seven points in the frame yet showed their championship resolve clawing back to take a 50-49 lead with under seven minutes to play in the contest. Castro would net a jumpshot and Scott would knocked down key freethrows to cement the victory for Bloomfield down the stretch as the Deacons Den cheered the buzzer sounding and the winless drought against Holy Family ending.
First year Head Coach Caputo commented after the game, "I am so proud of our girls as this was one of the biggest wins in our program's history at the Division II level." Scott poured in 11 of her 15 points in the second half going 7-for-8 from the charity stripe and Castro dropped 9 of her 13 points on 4-for-6 shots from the field.
Bloomfield will have a few days to savour this victory before preparing to hit the road in their next contest, traveling down the Turnpike to face the Lightning of Goldey Beacom College in the Joseph West Jones Center (4701
