WILMINGTON, DE - Bloomfield College Women's Basketball picked up their third consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory as they traveled down the Turnpike to defeat the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom 65-53 this afternoon. The Deacons saw 4 players score in double-figures led by guards
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, VA) and
Tianna Smith (Nanuet, NY) who both finished the game with 13 points apiece. The win keeps Bloomfield atop the CACC North Division with an 11-3 record (13-8 overall) while dropping the Lightning to 7-8 in conference action (10-12 overall).
The Deacons jumped out to a 6-0 lead after Wilson scored a fastbreak layup putting Goldey-Beacom in an early deficit with a little over 2 minutes played in the game, but the Lightning would storm back scoring the next 10-out-of-11 points and Bloomfield found themselves trailing for most of the opening frame. Goldey-Beacom led by as much as 9 points in the first half however the Deacons would rely on their nationally ranked defense and the play of Smith, who recorded 3 steals and 7 points before the break, to close the gap and eventually head to the lockeroom down just 1 (26-27). Tierra Scott (Bear, DE) helped the Bloomfield cause with 2 blocked shots and 5 points as the Deacons pulled within striking distance for the next half.
Scott opened the second half with a rebound and layup that gave Bloomfield a lead (28-27) they would never relinquish the rest of the game. Senior
Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, NJ) came off the bench to pour in 9 points on 3-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc coupled with a 10 point outburst in the half by Wilson and the Deacons saw their advantage peak at 15 with 2:02 left to play before securing the 12 point victory at the close of regulation. The Deacon defense recorded 8 steals in the 2nd half and forced 15 turnovers en route to the win.
Despite being out-rebounded by the Lightning (43-35) Bloomfield managed to force 27 turnovers in the contest. Scott finished up with 11 points and a game-high 8 rebounds, while Castro rounded out the Deacons double-digit offensive producers with 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from downtown. Wilson and Smith's 13 point performance was complimented by their 4 and 5 steals for the game respectively.
The Deacons next challenge comes when they travel to the home of crosstown rival Felician College for a CACC North Division face off on Tuesday, February 11th with a 6:00pm tip-off.
