BLOOMFIELD, NJ - For the first time in program history, the Bloomfield College women's basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament.
The CACC Tournament champions, the Lady Deacons will take on top-seeded Bentley University (29-0) in the opening round of the single-elimination East Regional Friday, Mar. 14. The Northeast-Ten Conference Tournament champions, Bentley will host the Regional in Waltham, Mass., with tip-off for the contest scheduled for 6 p.m.
One of eight tournaments taking place around the nation, the winner of the East Regional will advance to Division II basketball's biggest stage, the Elite Eight, which will take place in Erie, Pa. Mar. 25-28. Continuing their dream season, the Lady Deacons will look to become the first women's team in CACC history to win an East Regional Title.
"I could not be more proud of this entire team, players and coaches, for what they have accomplished to this point," first-year head coach
David Caputo said of the new CACC champions. "We have accomplished all of our goals that we set for ourselves as a team at the beginning of the year, but our work isn't done. We have reached the Big Dance, and now it's time to extend our season one win at a time. We have an amazing opportunity in front of us, and I know we will be ready for it."
Bloomfield capped a regular season in which it won its first-ever CACC North Division crown by winning all three Tournament contests by at least nine points en route to their historic postseason title and automatic NCAA Tournament bid. Owners of the seventh-ranked defense in the nation (surrendering just 56.6 points per game), the Lady Deacons will take on the undefeated Falcons for the first time this season in the Tournament's opening round.
"I am ecstatic for our women's team, and so proud of all that they have accomplished this season," athletic director and former BC women's basketball star
Sheila Wooten '85 said. "They have truly had a dream year, and have made history. To watch them play in the NCAA Tournament will definitely be a special moment for me. I know they will represent our school in the same outstanding way they have all season long."
