Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn - The Bloomfield College men's basketball team knocked off the second-seeded University of New Haven, 59-57 in NCAA East Regional quarterfinal action. The seventh-seeded Deacons (21-8) now advance to take on Saint Anselm in a semifinal match-up on Sunday, March 16th at 5:00pm at the Moore Field House. The Chargers end their season with a 21-9 overall record and a second straight 20 plus win season while Bloomfield avenges a regular season loss to New Haven (67-62) on Nov. 30th and advance in East Regional play.

Bloomfield took command of the game, building as much as an 18 point advantage but the Chargers came galloping back forcing the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) at-large bid qualifiers to hold on and squeak out the two point victory in the end. Senior Steve Henderson (West Orange, NJ) notched a game-high 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting from beyond 3-point range to pace the Deacon offense. Senior Kevin Udo (West Orange, NJ) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds including 12 off the defensive glass ultimately propelling the seventh-seed to the upset win.

The Deacons never trailed in the contest, charging out of the gate to a 12-2 lead over New Haven thanks to junior Marvin Williams (Jersey City, NJ) netting six of his eleven first half points in the opening six minutes of the frame. The margin would expand to eighteen (31-13) after back-to-back 3-pointers from Williams and Henderson with just 6 minutes remaining until halftime. New Haven would mount a 13-4 run to head into the break down 35-26.

Bloomfield held the Chargers to 27.0% shooting from the field in the opening stanza while shooting a blistering 5-for-10 from 3-point range on their end. New Haven held a slight 23-21 advantage in rebounds in the first half but would grow that margin in the second, helping them to come all the way back in the game.

The Chargers mounted an 8-0 run in the second period to pull even with Bloomfield (44-44) at the 12:30 minute mark. The Deacons, in their fourth straight year of NCAA Tournament experience leaned on squad veteran, Henderson who sank a 3-pointer to push them to a 59-51 advantage. Bloomfield wouldn't need to score another point as they held off the Chargers down the stretch and punched their ticket to the semifinal round.

The Deacons now turn their sites to the third-seeded Hawks of Saint Anselm College. The teams will meet for the tenth time in history as Saint Anselm holds a 5-4 advantage in the series including a 94-85 victory in their last outing on Dec. 30, 2012. Game time is all set for 5:00pm at Southern Connecticut State University's Moore Field House (125 Wintergreen Ave, New Haven, Conn. 06515). Tickets are $8 for general admission, $5 for seniors and $4 for students.
