BEARS HOLD OFF THE WARRIORS, 90-87 IN CACC NORTH ROAD BATTLE

NYACK, N.Y. - The Bloomfield College men's basketball team traveled to Bowman Gymnasium Wednesday night and defeated the Warriors of Nyack College, 90-87 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action. Senior guard, Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) poured in a game-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including 5-of-7 from beyond three-point range and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Senior, Matt Hall (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 19 points on the night, going a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range to help Bloomfield improve to 7-9 on the year and a 6-3 CACC mark. Nyack's offense was paced by guard, Khalid Samuels (Mt Vernon, N.Y.) 21 point performance that led four Warriors (5-12, 4-6 CACC) in double-figures for the game.

Bloomfield led the entire first half of the contest, watching their largest advantage come on a Hall jumper at the 10:50 mark to go up 25-14 on the Warriors. Williams 6-of-8 shooting performance spearheaded an efficient Bears attack in the opening frame. Bloomfield shot a blistering 66.7 percent (16-24) from the field, their highest of the 2014-2015 season, and took a 45-38 lead into the halftime break. Junior guard, Clarence White (Bronx, N.Y.) dished out 3 assists in the opening frame and added 6 points to the Bears effort. Forward, Nick Moore (Sicklerville, N.J.) had 8 points for the Warriors heading to the locker room to find a way to cool off the visiting squad.

Nyack quickly erased the Bloomfield advantage with a 10-2 run to start the second half. Samuels nailed a jumper with 9:46 on the clock that handed the Warriors their largest point spread, 67-61. White cut that deficit in half on the ensuing Bears possession with a three-pointer off a feed from Hall. After a Nyack turnover, White sent a dish down low to freshman, Ignacio Diez (Madrid, Spain) for a layup that drew Bloomfield to within one (66-67) with 8:48 remaining. The visitors leaned on their sharpshooting once again, knocking down four 3-pointers over a six-minute span to take a slight 82-78 edge. Samuels was not prepared to let his Warriors concede the game just yet when he knocked down a jumper that knotted the score at 83-83 with just 1:24 to go. On the next possession, Williams drove to the paint for a layup that put the Bears up for good and free throws down the stretch sealed the North Division victory for Bloomfield.

White finished the night with 17 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from downtown while sinking 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Diez had a perfect shooting game, tallying 9 points on 4-of-4 field goals, with one from beyond the arc. Junior forward Claude Blue (Brooklyn, N.Y.) poured in 11 points (4-of-6) as Bloomfield closed out the game shooting 62.5 percent from the floor. On the Warriors side of the ball, Moore shot 5-for-9 from the floor for 14 points on the night.

Nyack out-rebounded the Bears 30-25, which led to their 13-2 edge in second chance points. The Warriors battled hard in the trenches, besting Bloomfield 36-22 in points in the paint but the Bears made it rain from the skies, out performing Nyack, 66.7 percent (12-of-18) to 32.0 percent (8-of-25) from beyond the three point line.

The Bears next test rolls into the Bloomfield Gymnasium on Saturday, January 24 at 3:00 pm. They will host the Rams of Philadelphia University in a CACC cross-divisional battle. The men's basketball coaching staff will be participating in the Coaches vs Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Week. The staff will wear sneakers with their suits on gameday to raise funds and awareness about the fight against cancer. This cause has taken on a new meaning for our athletic department here at Bloomfield, with the passing of one of our bravest Bears last winter.
