ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Bloomfield College needed a collective team effort to knock off a very potent Molloy College team Tuesday evening, and that's precisely what it got as the Bears pulled out a non-conference victory over the Lions, 24-26, 25-22, 25-13, 26-24 on the road.
A pair of talented outside hitters
Valerie Bermudez (San Juan, P.R.) and
Diannmarie Rivera (Trujillo Alto, P.R.) led the offensive output for the Bears with 18 and 11 kills, respectively. Yet it was their defensive efforts in the back row that turned out to be the key to victory as the tandem posted 19 and 17 digs behind a career-high performance from sophomore libero,
Samantha Rios (Juncos, P.R.).
Rios recorded 38 digs and spent much of the night sticking serve receptions to jumpstart the Bears offense. Junior setters,
Edmarie Freytes (San Juan, P.R.) and
Jacquelyn Madlock (Alta Loma, Calif.) thrived off of the impressive defensive display registering 18 and 16 assists respectively.
At the net,
Elizabeth Meyer (Otsego, M.N.) posted a game-high four blocks and received help from
Alex Glasper (Hainesport, N.J.) and freshman
Kali Viles (McKinney, T.X.) who each chipped in 2 blocks on the evening. Bermudez, a conference Honor Roll player for the third consecutive week, also notched two aces for the match along with Rivera's two to balance out the Bloomfield (17-4) effort over Molloy (4-19).
The Bears get back to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Thursday evening when they take their three-game winning streak down the road to Felician College. The battle with the Golden Falcons is set to get underway at 7:00 pm.
