NEWARK, Del. - Junior
Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) scored a team-high 14 points, including 2-2 from the free throw line but the Bloomfield College women's basketball team could not pull out a win in their regular-season opener as Molloy College prevailed with a 68-60 victory Friday evening at the ECC/CACC Challenge played in Wilmington University's Athletic Complex.
The Bears lose their opening game for the second time under third-year head coach, Dave Caputo and sit at 0-1 on the new season. The Lions (1-0) begin the season perfect for the third consecutive year and defeat Bloomfield after dropping their last meeting in 2012.
Smith, who shot 6-for-15 on the evening also tallied three assists and a steal. Senior
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) netted 13 points (5-10 FG, 3-6 3-FG) to go along with seven rebounds and three helpers, while classmate
Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) also recorded 13 points (5-8 FG, 3-4 FT) in her Bloomfield debut and 7 boards. Sophomore
De'Andra Humphries (Boston, Mass.) came off the bench to add six points (3-9 FG) and two steals in twelve minutes of action.
Bloomfield had no answer for the Lions senior forward
Ally Leftridge (Melville, N.Y.) who went a perfect 6-for-6 from beyond the arc and poured in a game-high 23 points. Her classmates,
Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.) and
Kimani Jackson (Dix Hills, N.Y.) netted 19 and 16 points respectively as Molloy pulled away from the Bears in the 4th quarter under the NCAA's new rules for women's basketball.
Bloomfield will have a chance for redemption tomorrow afternoon when they face-off with another ECC opponent in Mercy College. The Bears will look to get to .500 with a 4:00pm start against the Mavericks on the neutral court of Wilmington University.
