BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Senior center
Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) posted a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with 9 points in the Bears 70-39 home opener victory Wednesday evening over Post University. Bloomfield now sits at 2-1 overall with a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference record while the Eagles fell to 0-3 on the young season and 0-1 after their league opener.
The Bears spotted the visiting Eagles the first three points of the game and after knotting the score on a Golden layup and free throw from sophomore guard
De'Andra Humphries (Boston, Mass), Bloomfield never looked back again. The Bears exploded for a 15-4 run to close out the first quarter under the new rules for NCAA women's basketball.
The second quarter scoring opened up with a layup from junior guard
Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) who finished with a game-high 16 points (6-10 FG, 4-7 FT). The Bears led by as-many-as eighteen (28-10) in the quarter but settled for a 32-18 advantage heading into the locker room after Smith converted one out-of three free throws after a n Eagle foul as the buzzer sounded.
Bloomfield came out for the third quarter with the same intensity that they went into the break with and a layup in the paint by senior guard
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) with 4:22 on the clock ballooned the CACC pre-season #1 team to a 29 point (52-23) lead.
The fourth quarter saw the Bears largest lead (66-30) come by way of a baseline jumper by sophomore guard,
Jahniece Jaffe (Egg Harbor, N.J.). Jaffe also scored Bloomfield's final points of the night on a layup to pull off the 70-39 win.
Jaffe scored all her points (4) in the second half of the evening while Humphries finished the game with 7 points (3-5 FG, 1-2 FT) and 3 rebounds. Smith and Golden also added 3 steals each to go along with their point totals and the guard chipped in 4 assists to the center's 3 dishes. The Bears shot 49.2 percent from the field including a blistering 56.67 percent in the second half alone.
Next up Bloomfield continues on the home front as the Bulldogs of Bowie State come into town on Friday for a 7:00 pm showdown. The non-conference battle will be the first meeting for the Bears with a CIAA opponent under head coach Dave Caputo.
