BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The one-two punch of
Claude Blue (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Rakwan Kelly (Newark, N.J.) combined for 48 points as Bloomfield came out on top over Dominican College 76-61 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action Tuesday evening. The second consecutive victory for the Bears evened their league record at 2-2 and improved their overall standings to 2-5 on the season. The Chargers dropped to 2-7 overall in 2015 and now hold a similar 2-2 conference mark after the setback.
Blue, who came off his career-high in the Bears last outing, shot 11 of 13 from the floor, including 4 of 5 from the stripe, while tallying nine rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocks. Kelly added 22 points on 9 of 16 shooting from the field to go along with seven rebounds and a career-best five assists. Classmate
Ignacio Diez (Madrid, Spain) chipped in 7 boards and 8 points for the Bears.
Sean O'Reilly shot 50 percent from the field (4-8 FG) for 11 points and Dominican's only double-digit scorer on the night. Sayon Charles came off the bench to grab five boards for the Chargers.
Dominican drained a shot from long distance for an early 3-0 lead, but back-to-back buckets from Blue and Kelly followed by a three-ball from sophomore
Juan Brown (Annapolis, M.D.) knotted the score at 7-7. The visitors enjoyed another three point advantage at the 11:14 minute mark (16-13) but the Bears would distance themselves with 11 points from Blue during a 19-2 run across the next five minutes. The home team led by as many as 20 points in the first half before settling in for a 46-31 advantage at the break.
The Chargers lost their stride for the evening and never closed the deficit to within single digits in the second frame. Bloomfield flexed ahead by twenty-seven (74-47) with 4:44 on the clock before closing out their North Division opponents with the Bears' reserves on the floor.
Bloomfield outshot Dominican with a sizzling 50.0 percent (32-64) to 44.6 percent (25-56) performance from the floor. The Bears dominated down low with a 44-34 edge in points in the paint and a 41-32 advantage on the glass. Blue and Kelly's performance in their starting roles led to the Chargers winning the battle of the benches, 32-11.
Bloomfield will return to action Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2:00 p.m. when they look for their third consecutive victory. They travel to face the Warriors of Nyack College in another CACC North Division battle.
