Newark, N.J. – The Bloomfield College baseball team (1-10, 0-4) continued to struggle Thursday afternoon as they were defeated, 8-1 by Philadelphia University (6-6, 3-3) at West Side Park in Newark.
It was a pitcher's duel early on as the Rams Abraham Almonte and the Bears
Francesco Scudiero (Brooklyn, N.Y.) breezed through the first three innings. That changed in the top half of the fourth.
Philly U loaded the bases with nobody out on a couple of errors and a fielder's choice. Taking advantage of Bloomfield's defensive lapse, the Rams brought in six runs on three hits to take a 6-0 lead. The big inning knocked Scudiero out of the game and the Bears brought in junior righty,
Justin Eclavea (South San Francisco, C.A.). Eclavea pitched three shutout innings, giving his team a chance to comeback.
Almonte continued to breeze through the Bears lineup as the lefty pitched seven innings of shutout baseball allowing just three hits while striking out four. With the great performance Almonte picked up his first victory of the season.
Philly U added two more runs on three hits in the top of the eighth when Bloomfield's senior
Mark Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) came into the game. Reyes could only get two outs before giving way to junior,
Kyle Murzyn (Glasboro, N.J.) who entered the game and got out of the bases loaded jam. Murzyn stayed in for the top of the ninth and delivered a 1-2-3 inning.
The Bears were able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) singled through the right side followed by
Isaac Pichardo's (Passaic, N.J.) double to right center. With runners on second and third and one out,
Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) hit a deep fly ball to left for a sacrifice fly driving in Reina to ruin the Rams shutout with an 8-1 final score.
Bloomfield takes to the road to try and put an end to their struggles this Saturday in a double header against Dowling College. First pitch of game one is set for Noon.
