NEW CASTLE, Del. –The Bloomfield College baseball team fell to powerhouse, Wilmington University, as the Wildcats remained perfect in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests on Saturday in Wilmington, Del. The Bears were defeated 9-2 in game one and 7-1 in game two.
Game one was a lot closer than the final score indicated. The Wildcats (24-7, 14-0) took advantage of a couple of early errors in the first and put up a three spot on Bears starter
Jose Toribio (West New York, N.J.) to take a 3-0 lead.
Bloomfield (3-20, 1-11) answered right back in the top of the second.
Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) led off the inning with a double down the left field line.
Ben Thomas (Burlington, N.J.) followed up with a walk and
Shadi Azar (South San Francisco, C.A.) moved them over with a sacrifice bunt down the third base line. Freshman Cristopher Cabral (Lodi, N.J.) and
Anthony Lantigua (Bellville, N.J.) drove in a run apiece, Cabral with a sacrifice fly and Lantigua with a single to right to make it 3-2.
Wilmington got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the second on a suicide squeeze to extend their lead to 4-2.
Toribio shut down the conference's top offense for the next four innings keeping the game at 4-2. The Wildcats got to him again in the seventh, loading the bases with one out forcing Toribio out of the game. Senior
Lucas Junger (Waretown, N.J.) came on in relief to try and get out of the jam. The righty balked in a run by dropping the ball while on the mound before giving up a three run homer to right center to make it 8-2.
Wilmington tacked on another run in the eighth to make the final score 9-2.
Charles Castellano (Bayonne, N.J.) got the ball in game two for the Bears. The lefty pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs while fanning five. Much like game one, Wilmington took an early 3-0 lead scoring two in the first and one in the second.
Bloomfield got on the board in the sixth making it 3-1 on
Juan Hilario's (Bronx, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to left bringing in
Isaac Pichardo (Passaic, N.J.).
The Wildcats extended their advantage in the seventh once again, scoring four runs on Bears reliever
Justin Eclavea (South San Francisco, C.A.). Eclavea got one out in the seventh and was pulled for
Kyle Murzyn (Glassboro, N.J.) who got Bloomfield out of the jam.
The Bears offense was unable to overcome the deficit and the Wildcats completed the sweep to go 14-0 and conference play.
Bloomfield will have Sunday and Monday to prep for a week full of games. Their busy week of action starts Tuesday as they travel up to University of Bridgeport for a 3 p.m. game.
