LIONS CLAIM 7-2 VICTORY OVER THE BEARS IN NON-CONFERENCE BATTLE

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Senior Jose Toribio (West New York, N.J.) put together another good outing against Molloy College but Bloomfield failed to capitalize. Toribio pitched seven strong innings and allowed just three earned runs while striking out five. Unfortunately it wasn't enough as the Bears were defeated 7-2.

The Bears drew first blood against the Lions scoring in the top of the first. Ben Thomas (Burlington, N.J.) led off the game with a line-drive single to left field. With Thomas running on the pitch Ray Lang (Middlesex, N.J.) lined a single to left center field and Thomas scored all the way from first giving his team a 1-0 lead.

Toribio came out in the bottom of the first and after two quick outs gave up a single, then a triple and just like that the Lions tied the game at 1-1.

Bloomfield extended their lead to 2-1 in the top of the third on one when Anthony Lantigua (Bellville, N.J.) led off the inning with a single. Thomas reached on a fielder's choice where Lantigua was thrown out at second. Thomas moved to second on a passed ball, to third on Lang's groundball to second, and came in to score on a wild pitch.

Toribio walked the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and balked in a run tying the game at two.

Molloy loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth with a couple hits and a walk, this time with nobody out. Toribio battled to get out of the inning with minimal damage. The Lions were only able to scratch out one run on a ground ball to second to give them a 3-2 lead.

Toribio delivered scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh to end his evening with his team trailing by one.

The Lion's offense went to work in the bottom of the eighth extending their lead to 7-2 off Bears reliever Ellis Sanchez (Kearny, N.J.). Sanchez surrendered all four runs on five hits before settling down and getting three consecutive outs to end the inning.

Thomas singled to left to start off the top of the ninth but was followed up by Lang grounding into a double play to dampen the Bears hopes of a rally. Juan Hilario (Bronx, N.Y.) worked a two out walk and was stranded as Carlos Flete (Jamaica, N.Y.) was punched out looking to end the game.

Thomas posted two hits on the day while Lang, Hilario, and Flete each had a hit a piece.

The Bears welcome Nyack College on Tuesday for a Central Atlantic Colligate Conference (CACC) double-header contest.
