CALDWELL, N.J. –
Steven Acosta (Lakewood, N.J.) picked up his first career win on Thursday against Caldwell College. Acosta pitched seven innings, striking out six while allowing just two earned runs. The freshman's performance was good enough to end Bloomfield's six game losing streak and led the Bears to a 4-2 win.
Offensively,
Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) led the way for Bloomfield going 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a homerun. Reina got the scoring starting in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly to center driving in
Ben Thomas (Burlington, N.J.) who got on base with a line drive single to left.
Bloomfield scored again in the top of the second to make it 2-0.
Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) reached on an error then swiped second to lead off the inning.
Carlos Flete (Jamaica, N.Y.) singled up the middle to bring in Montero.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the third Acosta gave up a double and a single to score a run as the Cougars cut the deficit to 2-1.
They loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth with nobody out, but only managed to bring across one run on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. Acosta toughened up and got a double play ball following the sacrifice fly and got out of the jam with minimal damage.
Bloomfield regained the lead in the sixth when Montero singled driving in
Brandon Morales (Hileah, F.L) which made it 3-2 Bears. That lead grew in the eighth when Reina connected for his second homer of the season extending his team's lead to 4-2.
Isaiah Arroyo (Tampa, F.L.) and
Kyle Murzyn (Glassboro, N.J.) each pitched a scoreless inning to secure the victory. Murzyn notched his first save of the season.
The Bears return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wilmington University for a double header in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play.
