LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, P.A. - The Bloomfield College Bears women's soccer team, with one senior and a host of new players opened their 2015 campaign with a 3-2 win on the road over Lincoln University under their new head coach,
Philip Fluhr. The Bears improved to 1-0 on the young season for the first time in three years while the Lions fall to 0-1 with loss at LU Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Lions jumped on the scoreboard first in the early moments of the contest when
Tamara Greene (Piscataway, NJ) sent a shot that found the net past junior captain keeper,
Diana Vincentini (Lacey TWP, N.J.) in the 8
th minute of action. Greene led the LU charge on offense with four total shots on goal.
Â
Bloomfield responded to tied the match in the 24
th minute off a blast by junior forward,
Rianna McNew (Somers Point, N.J.) on a pass from newcomer,
Nicole McWilliams (Staten Island, N.Y.). Lincoln reclaimed the lead at the 33-minute mark as
Christian Harris (Rochester, NY) went one-on-one against Vincentini for her first goal of the season with just over ten minutes remaining in the period.
Â
Lincoln fired ten shots in the opening period while the Bears managed eight. Minutes before halftime Bloomfield senior,
Sarah Barnes (Sayerville, N.J.) nailed the equalizer goal, her first of the season, to tie the game at 2-2 in the 43
rd minute.
Â
Conditioning became a factor in the next half as heat and exhaustion caught up with the Lions and two players were unable to continue due to the scorching heat. Bloomfield took advantage of the Lincoln fatigued players and launched twelve second half shots at LU's freshman goalie
Kaylee Dennis (Ashburn, VA) forcing nine saves in the final period. All Bloomfield needed was for one to get thru and that came off the foot of junior
Paola Ramos (North Bergen, N.J.) who netted the game winning goal in the 83
rd minute putting the Bears up 3-2 and secured the season opening road victory.
Â
The Bears return to action next week with their home opener against Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday at Foley Field. The non-conference test is slated to begin at 7:00pm.
