BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - For the first time since the 2010 season the Bloomfield College Bears women's soccer team sits at 2-0 to start their year after a 3-2 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) on Tuesday evening at Foley Field. The Bears welcomed the sight of their home field, jumping out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening period but the Spartans battled back with two goals in the second forcing Bloomfield to hold on for the win.
Sophomore
Nicole McWilliams (Staten Island, N.Y.) brought the home crowd to their feet early in the thirteenth minute when she blasted a shot past STAC's goalie, Lauren Morales (Tobyhanna, PA) that gave Bloomfield a 1-0 advantage. A little over a minute later, junior
Alicia Galiano (Washington TWP, N.J.) found the back of the net with a ball from twenty-five yards out and the Bears growled to a 2-0 lead. Galiano continued her outstanding play on the night when she served up a cross in the box that junior transfer
Karla Calderon (West New York, N.J.) poked by Morales for a 3-0 advantage in the 28th minute. Bloomfield was in command heading into the intermission holding the Spartans without a shot on goal in the first half.
Junior captain,
Diana Vincentini (Lacey TWP, N.J.) faced more pressure in the second period in goal as the Spartans got on the board in the 56th minute of the contest when Alyssa Rosania (Butler, N.J.) scored her first goal of the 2015 season. Rosania added her second goal of the year off a cross in the penalty area that slipped just beyond Vincentini and STAC had new life in the 78th minute. The Bears weathered the Spartan battle cry for the rest of the way and preserved their second win of the season.
STAC finished the night with ten shots, all coming in the second period with six of them on goal but the Bloomfield keeper turned away four of them. The Bears managed thirteen shots for the contest with seven of them being on goal and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.,
Next up, Bloomfield will welcome the Wildcats of Wilmington University on Saturday, September 12th for a showdown at Foley Field. The Bears look to get their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule underway when the league foe from Delaware arrive for an 11:00am start time.
