WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior
Diannmarie Rivera (Trujillo Alto, P.R.) led with 11 kills and 11 digs as the Bloomfield College volleyball team took down Assumption College, 3-0 in the first match of the season Saturday afternoon. Junior transfer,
Valerie Bermudez (San Juan, P.R.) took charge in the second match with 19 kills and 7 digs of her own, as the Bears triumphed over American International College (AIC) 3-1, at the Assumption Tournament in their second game of the day.
With the pair of wins, the Bears jump out to 2-0 on the young season.
In the first game, Saint Anselm jumped out of the gate, winning the match in three sets: 25-20, 25-22, and 25-18. Aside from Rivera, Bermudez fueled the offense with ten kills, while junior setter,
Jacquelyn Madlock (Alta Loma, C.A.) post 19 assists and
Edmarie Freytes (San Juan, P.R.) added 11.
In the second game, the Bears gave up the first set 15-25, before taking the next three straight 25-11, 25-20 and 25-18.
Bermudez tied the game-high with her 19 kills, while Rivera chipped in fourteen kills of her own to go along with sixteen digs. Freytes, at the setter position in game two passed off 22 assists and recorded a service ace. Sophomore
Alex Glasper (Hainesport, N.J.) and junior
Elizabeth Meyer (Otsego, M.N.) had six blocks apiece and sophomore Libero,
Samantha Rios dug out sixteen for the Bears during the win.
The Bears return to the court in a week when they travel to Southern Connecticut State University Saturday, Sept. 12 for a tri-match beginning at 11:00am against the hosts and then a 1:00pm showdown with West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Bloomfield won't see their home court until Sept. 26
