RUTHERFORD, N.J. - For the third consecutive game the Bloomfield College men's basketball team used a second half come back and snatched a 80-79 thrilling overtime win over Felician University Wednesday evening at the Job Gymnasium.
Nick Davidson (Lumberton, N.J.) poured in 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor and led the Bears starters who all scored in double-figures during the road victory.
Bloomfield improved to 6-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action after the North Division battle and 7-10 overall for the season. The Golden Falcons fell to 3-7 in league play and 6-11 overall following the home loss.
Senior
Claude Blue (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shot 5-for-6 from the field including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to go along with seven rebounds, two assists and three blocks. Sophomore
Rakwan Kelly (Newark, N.J.) supported the Bears effort with 13 points (4-8 FG, 5-6 FT), five boards, an assist and a theft while classmates
Juan Brown (Annapolis, M.D.) and
Ignacio Diez (Madrid, Spain) rounded out the Bloomfield double-figure starters with 11 points respectively.
Jamal Reid recorded the first triple-double in Felician men's basketball history with 19 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds (7 defensive). Kennedy Chukwuocha also added 20 points for the Golden Falcons.
Felician opened up the overtime session with a jumper before Blue sank a free and Kelly converted a layup to put the Bears up 74-73 with 3:44 to play. Reid sank back-to-back buckets to put the Golden Falcons back in front but after Brown hit a pair from the line, Blue blocked a shot to prevent a response from the home team. Bloomfield's next possession saw the senior secure an offensive board and answer with a three-point play after getting fouled to give Bloomfield a 79-77 edge with 1:13 on the clock.
Reid missed two foul shots down the stretch to pull his team closer but Kelly kept Felician's hopes alive by converting only 1 of 2 from the line after being fouled. The Golden Falcons elected to take a quick lay-up for an 80-79 score with a little over ten ticks on the clock. Davidson left the door wide open for the 'Green Out' crowd to erupt after he missed two free throws but the Felician final attempt bounced off the back of the rim as the extra period buzzer sounded to preserve the Bears second consecutive overtime game victory.
Felician outshot Bloomfield, 47.2 percent (34-72) to 45.8 percent (27-59), while the Bears were better from beyond the arc, 41.2 percent (7-17) to 29.6 percent (8-27). Bloomfield held a 65.5 percent (19-29) to 30.0 percent (3-10) advantage from the line, connecting on more free throws than Felician attempted. The Golden Falcons forced 15 Bear mistakes for a 16-10 margin in points off turnovers, but the visitors won the glass, 39-35, for a slight 14-12 gap in second chance points.
Felician started the game with a 17-6 outburst over the first seven-plus minutes, and went into the locker room up, 40-33. Bloomfield clawed back from second-half deficits of nine and six points, and took a 64-60, lead with 6:34 left in regulation. The Golden Falcons had a 71-68 edge when Brown drilled a shot from beyond the arc to force the overtime frame. Missed opportunities haunted Felician as Chukwuocha was unable to convert a contested lay-up in the closing seconds of regulation.
Next up the Bears will host the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in a game that has been moved to Friday, January 22. Due to impending weather conditions the CACC battle will tip off at 6:00 pm.
