WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior transfer guard
Zhane Robinson (Newark, N.J.) notched a double-double in her debut as a Bear and lead the Bloomfield College women's basketball team to a 67-56 season opening victory over the University of New Haven on Friday night. Coming off the bench, Robinson was the only Bear to shoot over 50.0 percent from the field (8-for-14) including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc for a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 boards.
The dynamic duo backcourt of
Morgan Taylor (Paterson, N.J.) and
Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) combined for twenty-five points and five assists on the night while sophomore forward
Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, M.D.) recorded seventeen points, six boards and two steals.
Bloomfield led at the end of each quarter on the evening and started the contest with ten consecutive free throws (10-7) until Robinson came off the bench to drain the visitors' first bucket of the match. Robinson even fueled the Bears push in the fourth quarter, netting 11 of her total points down the stretch that helped seal the regional win.
Despite being outshot for the game, 40.4 percent to 36.8 percent Bloomfield held a 20-8 advantage in second chance points and a comfortable 19-7 margin in makes at the charity stripe.
The Bears hibernate for the weekend before gearing up for another regional road contest when they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. on Wednesday to face Molloy College. Game time is set for 5:00 pm against the Lions as Bloomfield looks to move to 2-0 on the season.
