CALDWELL, N.J. - Sophomore
Nick Davidson (Lumberton, N.J.) recorded his fourth 20 plus game in the Bears last five outings as he led Bloomfield's men's basketball team to a 80-57 victory on the road against Caldwell University Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. Davidson registered 24 points to help clinch the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division regular-season title for the Bears.
The league's top seed in the North Division heading into post-season play, sits at 13-12 overall and 12-6 in conference battles for the year. The Cougars fell to 9-16 for the year, 7-10 in CACC action and on the verge of elimination from the playoffs.
Davidson shot 8-for-12 from the field including 2-4 from beyond the arc and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line while snagging five rebounds, an assist and a block. The sophomore led four of the Bears five starters in double figures as classmates
Ignacio Diez (Madrid, Spain) and
Rakwan Kelly (Newark, N.J.) netted ten points (3-4 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 3-4 FT) and eleven points (4-7 FG, 3-4 FT) respectively.
Claude Blue (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded 11 points on 4-for-9 from the floor and grabbed a game-high seven boards to go along with a block and an assist on the day. Off the bench, freshman
Safee Abdus-Sabur (Newark, N.J.) continued to shine as he contributed fourteen points, four boards and two steals.
Dawan Lighty scored 14 points for the Caldwell offense to lead their team.
The game began in exciting fashion as the fans were thrilled by a three-point frenzy at the start. Bloomfield buried three from beyond the arc and Caldwell knocked down three from long range with the difference being a slam-dunk from the home team for an 11-9 edge with four minutes played in the game. The Cougars took control of the next four-minute span and extended their advantage to 23-15 as 12:08 showed on the clock. The Bears dug deep and clawed out a 21-3 response for a ten-point margin (36-26) with a little over three minutes remaining until the half. Bloomfield enjoyed a 43-34 lead as the teams headed for the locker rooms after the first half.
The North Division's regular season champion led the entire second half even though the Cougars pulled to within five (50-45) at the 13:30 minute-mark. The Bears used a 16-4 run to break the game wide open over the next six and a half minutes. Abdus-Sabur padded his stats with back-to-back three-pointers that ballooned the visitors lead to the largest of the afternoon (25) before the game's final score was recorded.
The Bears outshot Caldwell with a blistering 51.9 percent (25-52) to 34.4 percent (25-67) advantage including 50 percent from beyond the arc (8-16). Bloomfield even shot a higher percentage from the line 78.3 percent (18-23) to 72.7 percent (8-11) and converted more free throws (18) than the home team attempted (11). The Bears committed 20 mistakes but the Cougars only held a slight 15-13 edge in points off turnovers. Bloomfield dominated the glass 45-25 but Caldwell owned the paint 34-28.
After clinching the regular season North Division title The Bears now prepare for 'Senior Night' on Tuesday. Bloomfield will host the Warriors of Nyack College in the final game of the regular season set for a 7:30 p.m. tip off. The program will honor seniors,
